Scam-safety for your congregationDon't get fooled. A ministry to your members.
Scammers now use AI to fake a grandchild's voice, a pastor's face and a bank's email. This friendly, plain-English session helps your members recognize the tricks and know exactly what to do. Your church hosts it, and your members attend free.
Why older members are the target
lost by Americans over 60 to internet fraud reported to the FBI in 2023.1
average loss per victim over 60.2
victims over 60 reported to the FBI in one year.2
Tech support scams were the most-reported crime against people over 60.1
These are only the cases people reported. Many victims never tell anyone, out of embarrassment, so the same trick works again on someone else in the same congregation.
The tricks your members will learn to spot
These are the tricks scammers are using now. Members see and hear what each one looks like, then practice what to do.
"Grandma, I'm in trouble"
Scammers clone a loved one's voice from a short online video. The FBI recommends a family secret word; members leave with one.3
The fake pastor
AI-made videos and voices of pastors have been used to ask for donations.4
The fake sermon
Nearly 100 AI-made sermons were posted to YouTube in 2025 under John MacArthur's name, and many viewers believed them.5
The tech support call
A pop-up or phone call says your computer is infected and asks for access or payment. Members learn to hang up.1
The fake email or invoice
One convincing email cost a church in Ohio $1.75 million. The call-back rule stops it.6
The fake photo
AI can make convincing pictures of events that never happened. Members learn to pause before sharing or acting.
What your members gain
- Three rules they can remember: pause, hang up, call back on a number you already know
- A large-print wallet card with the rules and key phone numbers
- A family code word, and the encouragement to set one up at home
- Your church's own statement on how it will, and will never, ask for gifts
- The confidence to ask for help without embarrassment
What this isn't
- It isn't a scare session. The tone is friendly, practical and respectful.
- It isn't financial or legal advice, and no one is asked about their own accounts.
- It can't promise no one will ever be fooled. It makes it much harder, and it tells people what to do if it happens.
- It isn't a sales pitch to your members. Nothing is sold in the room.
